Default 2009 Triple Crown Series results

Redondo Beach, CA – November 2, 2009 The 3rd and final round of the 2009 APBA Triple Crown of Offshore Endurance Racing featured the inaugural Dana Point to Oceanside and Back 52 mile race on Sunday November 1, 2009. The field included seven separate classes vying for the overall win and individual class win.

The field of both seasoned veteran racers and new riders lined up just outside of the Dana Point Harbor at 9:00 a.m. and awaited the start flag. As the flag dropped the race was on and the entire field were on their way to the turn boat some 26 miles South located just outside of the Oceanside Pier. The weather was near perfect as great visibility, no fog and near flat conditions on the water created a scenario for record speeds and time for the event.

At just about the twenty minute mark into the race the call came in from the SEA-TOW Turn boat at Oceanside that the first two racers were in sight. Call had been coming into the SEA-TOW Start/Finish boat at Dana Point that several boats had dropped out due to mechanical failure with the most serious being Jim Walker’s boat sinking some 10 miles from the Dana Point harbor. Fortunately, as discussed during the rider’s meeting and having had his own experience with a sinking craft, Manufacturer Stock Class racer Ahmed Hamade #242 on his Sea-Doo RXT saw Walker and his boat in trouble and gave up his race to rescue the downed rider and tow his boat back to Dana Point.

This self-less act once again showed the kind of person Ahmed is and the camaraderie this sport has. At just under the 40 minute mark, 2 racer’s were in sight of the Finish line and at 40 minutes and 56 Seconds, Pat Roque, Huntington Beach, CA on Lee Phan’s borrowed Sea-Doo RXT #77 crossed the finish line to win the overall and 1st place in the Pro/Am Class. This is Patrick’s 2nd Offshore Endurance Overall Win as he won the prestigious Long Beach to Catalina and Back APBA Offshore National Championships a few short years ago. 2nd Overall and 1st in the Amateur Open Class was Reno, NV native Sean Conner #7 on his Sea-Doo RXT. 3rd Place went to veteran Pro/Am class racer Paul Pham #99, Fountain Valley, CA finishing with a time of 41:36, just 8 seconds behind 2nd Place Sean Conner.

Other notables were Kim Bushong, La Palma, CA #98 on a Kawasaki Ultra 250 X who finished 4th overall and 1st in the Vet/Master Class and PWCOFFSHORE.com founder and 2009 Mark Hahn Memorial 300 winner #58 Mark Gerner, Aliso Viejo, CA on his Kawasaki Ultra 250 X who finished 5th overall and 3rd in the Pro/Am Class. Newcomer Akira Tanaka, Torrance CA # 470 on a Kawasaki Ultra 260 in his very first APBA Offshore Endurance race won the very competitive Sportsman Class with an impressive time of 44 minutes and 8 seconds.

Challenged Athlete Warren Frank, #619 San Diego, CA on a Kawasaki 260 finished 1st in class with a time of 45 min. 8 seconds. Warren has been consistently at the top of the Challenged Athlete class since it was adopted by RPM earlier this year. Erica Davis, a parapalegic racer in the Challenged Athlete class completed her first event with a time of 1 hour 4 minutes and 51 seconds.

Congratulations to all racers that participated in the 2009 APBA Triple Crown of Offshore Endurance Racing! Special Thanks to: Mark Gerner, Steve Friebe, Shawn Alladio & the Entire K-38/Liquid Militia, Aaron Cress, Mike Follmer, Monica Jackson, Ashley Jurick & Brian Wilson.
