1-30-10 DP-Huntington...Sorta..
28 days and counting. The rain has stopped in So.Cal, the waters are free of Debris, and the dreaded "run off" has made its way south. So, what else is their to do on a sunny day in So. Cal, but to train for the upcoming Mark Hahn 300! We set out for a 9 O'Clock departure. The usual crew of Tommy, John, Russell, and myself. Short Gerner for this ride, we hit the water almost exactly at 9:00. We got outside the wake zone, and kinda waited, as none of us had taken command as to which route we would go. Someone finally decided to Go North. Fine by me. The water was calm, the swells were subtle. We had a fast pace as usual, with the 2 Ultra's leading the way! The 15F and Honda trailing by just half a minute or so behind. We kept the pace up. We got almost to Newport, when we had a mechanical on one of the boats, so we decided to head back. I tried to stay in the wakes of the 250x's, as well as the honda, doing "CUTS" over the wakes. I'd also ride on the wake for some time. Mixing it in, cut backs help you get used to "different" types of waters. Your not riding only into, or out of the swells, but at time's parallel. So I get different water conditions, trying to simulate what I saw at last years MH300. The wake practice is good as well. At the start of the race, its chaos, and you MUST be wake savvy, otherwise you might be swimming, or spinning! Neither would be a good idea with 20+ boats coming at you WOT.
Trying to increase my training on basically a flat day, I was doing the Alladio/ Gerner learned 1 hand riding! Only using your throttle hand to ride. The boat has a tendency to to go with the current. Correcting the boat with 1 hand is tough. You can feel your midsection working! Your legs working. Your shoulder as well. Keeping the boat at or near a WOT is also tough! However, a good way to increase stamina, awarness, and boat control with 1 hand. I did this for what seemed like miles, but maybe it was only a few miles. We were back to Dana Point in no time.
As we approached DP, out of the ocean appears Ian. He was doing his thing. We all continued to San Clemente Pier. We shot the breeze near the pier for a bit, then decided to head back, and wash up.All boats running great at this point, the ride back (5 miles) was fast! As we approach the harbor, we see 4 jet ski's, with helmets…Its turns out Warren, Mark Manke, David Fekete and Dawn Fekete were also doing some MH300 training.
Great day on the water, great company! Looking forward to the same place and same time next week with the guys!
